Enterprising Colleges Invest in Learning Resources
CAVC donates car to Radyr Comp
The Auto department at Cardiff and Vale College has donated a car to Radyr Comprehensive School for use on their Auto Engineering course. The Ford Ka will be used in the practical lessons by students studying the Entry Level 3 course in Auto Engineering. The college been working in partnership with the school to implement this course as part of the local learning partnerships. more>>>
Launch of Youth Enterprise Centre of Excellence
Gower College Swansea has linked up with Admiral Insurance to launch the Young Enterprise (YE) Centre of Excellence. The project involves around 120 students who will be encouraged to set up businesses, trade goods and services and enter competitions throughout the academic year. more>>>
Discovering talent and health through art
Coleg Harlech WEA has launched a ground-breaking opportunity to people who would not otherwise find it easy to access courses. In conjunction with the Friends of the Renal Unit, patients attending the renal and diabetes unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, in Bodelwyddan, are guided by an artist-in-residence to discover their artistic talents. The project has sparked a great deal of interest from health experts across the UK who would like to copy the idea. more>>>

Food lover's online shopping treat launch at Yale College
Wrexham has found a unique way to bring local produce to the consumer and celebrate the fine food of its region. Lovefinefood.com will see customers doing their weekly shop from a wide choice of locally sourced foods online and collecting it from Yale College. And for students, the site has opened up a wealth of new opportunities. They are offering a range of "dine-at-home" dishes developed using produce from local suppliers so that the public can enjoy restaurant-quality food with friends and family in the comfort of their own home. more>>>

British film director Brian Percival, previously a student at Yale College, has won an Emmy this week for the popular ITV period drama `Downton Abbey` at US television's awards show in Los Angeles. more>>>

Formula 1 success
Five Coleg Llandrillo students won the Best Sponsorship and Marketing Award at the world finals of the F1 for Schools Challenge in Malaysia, where teams from 22 countries around the world designed, built and raced a miniature Formula 1 car and drew up a sponsorship plan. more>>>

Apprentice of the year
Gower College Swansea apprentice Robert Morgan has been awarded third place in the Institute of Mechanical Engineers’ IMechE Apprentice of the Year competition and was presented with his trophy by the organisation’s President, Rod Smith, in London. It’s the latest in a line of accolades for Robert, who was the college’s Engineering Technology Student of the Year in 2010. more>>>

A local plumber Lee James Cuthill has won a silver medal in the prestigious UK SkillPlumb competition and shown himself to be one of the best in the UK. more>>>
Music lecturer’s band represents UK at international festival
Dr Peter Stacey, a lecturer in music and music technology at Coleg Sir Gâr has returned from after representing the UK at a major international music festival, Sharq Taronalari, sponsored by Unesco. more>>>
Nuffield Foundation benefits more students
For the fourth successive year, students from Gower College Swansea have been awarded bursaries by the Nuffield Foundation to undertake research at Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science & Informatics. This year, the bursaries have enabled IT students Kristofer Anderson and Ashley Thomas to take part in a 3D modelling research project at Cardiff University, under the direction of Professor David Marshall. more>>>
Yale College Apprentice is off to Uganda to renovate Schools
In a remarkable display of determination and success, mum Sharon and daughters Rhian and Zara Sheady are all destined for careers in engineering after Sharon was crowned Apprentice of the Year and the sisters gain no fewer than six A grades between them, including 3 A stars. This week, Sharon is setting off to Uganda on a sponsored trip by her employer Chester and District Housing Trust to renovate schools where she will use her electrical installation and renovations skills. more>>>
Designs on the Future of Fashion
Wrexham Fashion Week’s Charity Fashion Show showcased the work of young and talented students from Yale College alongside Baffino, Matalan, Serruti, First Lady Bridal and online vintage fashion retailer The Babootique. Organised by Wrexham County Borough Council for the Year of Culture, it included professional models and choreography as well as the talents of Production Arts, Performing Arts, and Art and Design students. more>>>

Bee Power!
Enterprising eco students from Bridgend College and pupils from Dolau Primary School have composed an original hip-hop song ‘Bee Power’ to highlight the plight of the Bumblebee and fundraise to save this incredible insect. It will be launched and available for download on 17 October. The aim is to raise over £5,000 with 40,000 sales for the National Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Size of Wales.

Pioneering scheme scores a hit
The Rhyl Strikers project - a football-based scheme set up to help unemployed people have a shot at a new future - has notched up an impressive scoring rate with more than 50 participants having found jobs, 179 having gained UEFA-recognised qualifications and 282 having gone on to Further Education. more>>>
Video CVs Helping Students with Additional Needs
Two Bridgend College students have had the opportunity to take part in a video CV initiative with the charity ‘Follow Your Dreams’. The aim is to show the skills that students with additional needs have, rather than relying on a paper based CV which can too easily be overlooked. more>>>
